About the Role

The Opportunity

If you're an experienced ecologist who enjoys combining technical excellence with meaningful project work, this could be the kind of opportunity worth exploring.

Perhaps you're looking for greater ownership of projects, a stronger voice within a multidisciplinary team, or the chance to work on a wider variety of developments across the South East. Whatever is prompting you to consider your next move, this role offers the opportunity to play a key part in delivering ecological advice that genuinely influences planning and development outcomes.

You'll join a well-established innovative, environmental consultancy with a strong reputation for delivering high-quality ecological, landscape and environmental advice. The team is growing steadily, projects are varied and interesting, and there is plenty of scope to shape your own career path as the business continues to evolve.

The Company

Our client is an independent environmental consultancy with a long-standing presence across the South East of England. Bringing together specialists from a range of environmental disciplines, the business works collaboratively to provide practical, evidence-led advice on a diverse portfolio of projects.

Their work spans residential, commercial, infrastructure and mixed-use developments, supporting clients from the earliest stages of project planning through to delivery. The culture is professional yet approachable, with a genuine emphasis on collaboration, technical quality and supporting people to develop their careers.

This is the sort of environment where ideas are welcomed, expertise is valued and individuals are trusted to take ownership of their work.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Senior or Principal Ecologist, you'll take a leading role in delivering ecological advice across a broad range of projects, including:

  • Leading ecological surveys, assessments and site-based investigations.

  • Producing high-quality ecological reports, including Ecological Impact Assessments and Biodiversity Net Gain documentation.

  • Advising clients and project teams on biodiversity, habitat management and environmental legislation.

  • Working closely with planners, landscape architects and other environmental specialists to deliver integrated solutions.

  • Building strong relationships with clients, local authorities and key stakeholders.

  • Supporting and mentoring junior members of the ecology team.

  • Contributing to project strategy, technical excellence and best practice across the business.

About You

You'll likely be working in ecological consultancy already and comfortable managing projects from survey through to reporting and client communication.

You may currently be operating at Senior level and looking for a clearer progression route, or already working as a Principal Ecologist seeking a role with greater flexibility, project variety or influence.

You'll bring:

  • Strong knowledge of UK habitats, protected species and relevant environmental legislation.

  • Experience producing ecological reports independently and to a high technical standard.

  • Confidence managing client relationships and project delivery.

  • A degree in Ecology or a related environmental discipline.

  • Membership of CIEEM or a commitment to professional development within the sector.

  • A collaborative approach and a willingness to support and develop others.

What's on Offer

Alongside a competitive salary of £36,000–£55,000, depending on experience, you'll benefit from:

  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements.

  • A diverse range of projects across planning and development sectors.

  • Ongoing technical development, CPD and training support.

  • Funding for a professional membership.

  • Clear opportunities for progression and increased responsibility.

  • Employee bonus scheme.

  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays and an additional Christmas closure period.

  • Holiday purchase and sell-back options.

  • Wellbeing support, including access to health and lifestyle benefits.

  • Regular social events and team activities.

  • A supportive and collaborative culture where people are encouraged to grow professionally.

Location & Flexibility

This role is based in South East England, with projects throughout the region and London. Hybrid and flexible working arrangements are available, allowing a balance between office, site and home-based work.
