About the Role
Ocean to Earth Recruitment is proud to partner with a well-established environmental consultancy in their search for a highly motivated and experienced Senior Technical Ecologist to join their office-based team in Knutsford, Cheshire. This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual with a solid ecological background who enjoys working in a technical and advisory capacity, supporting a wide range of impactful projects from start to finish.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert technical advice on ecological assessments, biodiversity strategies, and habitat management plans.

  • Lead the interpretation and quality review of ecological survey data in line with current legislation and industry best practices.

  • Produce and review high-quality technical documentation including PEAs, EcIAs, HRAs, UKHab classifications, BNG assessments, and protected species licence applications.

  • Manage ecological input for planning submissions, engaging with clients, regulators, and internal teams.

  • Mentor and guide junior ecologists, supporting their technical development and progression.

  • Stay informed on changes to ecological legislation, guidance, and policy.

  • Contribute to business development efforts, including the preparation of tenders and proposals for complex projects.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree (BSc or MSc) in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in ecological consultancy or similar.

  • In-depth understanding of UK wildlife legislation, planning policy, and ecological standards.

  • Proven experience in writing and reviewing technical reports to a high standard.

  • Knowledge of BS42020:2013, UKBAP habitats/species, and ecological planning frameworks.

  • Experience in Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments and mitigation strategies.

  • Strong understanding of protected and invasive species in the UK context.

  • Proficiency with GIS mapping tools and ecological data analysis.

  • Confident communicator with experience liaising with varied stakeholders.

  • Membership (or eligibility for membership) of CIEEM.

Desirable Skills

  • Holder of protected species disturbance licences (e.g., bat, GCN, dormouse).

  • Experience preparing and securing Natural England mitigation licences.
