Senior Ecologist
Meet Our Recruiter
About the Role
Ocean to Earth Recruitment is working with a growing environmental consultancy to recruit an experienced Senior Ecologist.
This is a strong opportunity for an ecologist who enjoys combining technical consultancy with fieldwork, project management and team development. You will work across a varied portfolio of projects, with the scope to take genuine ownership of your work and develop towards a key leadership position as the business continues to grow.
The role offers a balance of practical field and desk-based work, with projects requiring commercially considered ecological solutions across a range of sectors.
About the role
As Senior Ecologist, you will manage a varied workload while providing technical oversight and supporting the wider ecology team.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing ecological projects from initial client discussions through to delivery
- Undertaking and overseeing ecological surveys
- Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA)
- Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA)
- Designing and implementing ecological mitigation
- Ecological Clerk of Works duties
- Supervising field teams and survey programmes
- Mentoring and developing colleagues
- Building strong, long-term client relationships
- Supporting new business development
- Financial and project management
- Providing technical oversight and sign-off of ecological outputs
About you
You will already have established consultancy experience and be comfortable taking responsibility for your own projects and technical decisions.
Ideally, you will bring:
- A degree in Ecology or a closely related discipline
- Around 3 to 5 years' post-graduate ecological consultancy experience
- Experience with protected habitats and species
- Knowledge of invasive species management
- Strong ecological assessment and technical report writing skills
- Experience preparing ecological elements of Environmental Impact Assessments
- Knowledge of UK, Irish and EU wildlife legislation and current survey best practice
- Experience obtaining protected species licences and working with regulatory bodies
- Confidence mentoring and supporting less experienced colleagues
- Strong client communication and relationship-building skills
- The ability to work independently, make sound technical decisions and manage deadlines
- A full driving licence and willingness to undertake fieldwork and occasional travel across Ireland and the UK
CIEEM membership would be beneficial, although it is not essential.
Why consider this opportunity?
There is a particularly good package around flexibility, professional development and longer-term progression.
Benefits include 25 days' annual leave, increasing to 29 days after two years, plus public holidays, private health insurance, company pension, annual and performance bonus schemes, paid professional memberships and fully funded training and development. There are also flexible family and extended leave options, a cycle-to-work scheme, company vehicle access and support towards further professional qualifications for longer-serving employees.
Most importantly, this is an opportunity to join a growing environmental business where your experience can have a visible impact. For someone who wants to remain technically involved while developing their project management, mentoring, client and leadership experience, there is plenty of scope to grow.
The position is based on a hybrid/office basis from Enniskillen or Lisburn, working primarily across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
