About the Role

Ocean to Earth Recruitment is proud to partner with a leading multidisciplinary environmental consultancy in their search for a passionate Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Consultant to join their expanding team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an early-career ecologist with approximately 1–2 years of experience who is eager to take a hands-on role in delivering BNG solutions across a wide range of development and conservation projects. You’ll be instrumental from early project stages right through to post-development monitoring—helping to shape outcomes that support biodiversity while guiding clients through policy, strategy, and implementation.

The Role

With Biodiversity Net Gain now mandatory across England, this position offers the chance to be part of the national effort to embed nature-positive design into development. This role blends both field and desk-based work, including habitat assessments, BNG metric calculations, and the creation of long-term management and monitoring plans.

You’ll work collaboratively with a broad team of in-house specialists (ecologists, landscape architects, arboriculturalists) and external consultants to deliver high-quality, environmentally driven solutions. Flexibility, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to learning are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting a diverse portfolio of projects from initial assessment to post-development monitoring

  • Conducting habitat surveys (UKHab methodology), condition assessments, and on-site mapping

  • Producing BNG feasibility reports and design-stage assessments

  • Writing 30-year habitat management and monitoring plans

  • Collaborating across teams and contributing ecological input to multidisciplinary projects

  • Advising clients and occasionally assisting with stakeholder presentations and workshops

  • Liaising with habitat banks and assisting in the acquisition of off-site biodiversity units

  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date project documentation

  • Supporting team planning and resource management across ecological and environmental teams

Essential Requirements

  • Around 2 years’ experience conducting BNG assessments and applying the Biodiversity Metric

  • Degree-level qualification in ecology or a relevant environmental field

  • Strong field survey skills, including habitat assessment and condition scoring

  • Proficiency with UKHab methodology

  • Experience delivering technical reports clearly and concisely

  • Familiarity with GIS tools

  • Understanding of habitat management plans and conservation strategy

  • Excellent time management and ability to deliver under deadlines

  • Basic knowledge of UK and EC wildlife legislation and planning policy

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills

  • IT competence (MS Office)

  • Full UK driving licence

  • Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional travel and overnight stays

Desirable

  • Membership of CIEEM or working toward professional membership
