About the Role

Are you an experienced ecologist with a passion for mentoring, problem-solving, and delivering high-quality environmental solutions? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you!

Ocean to Earth Recruitment is working with a well-respected environmental consultancy that truly values work-life balance, offering a permanent four-day workweek and a strong commitment to sustainability as a BCorp-certified business. Our client believes in fostering a collaborative environment, with office days on Mondays and Thursdays to connect with colleagues, as well as regular site visits and client interactions.

We are seeking an accomplished ecologist with a strong technical background to play a key leadership role within the ecology team. This position involves supporting and mentoring consultants and graduates, guiding them through the early stages of their careers, and helping to secure projects that align with the team’s expertise. You will cultivate meaningful relationships with clients, providing strategic solutions to support their projects in a commercially viable manner.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Act as a technical lead, sharing expertise and mentoring team members.

  • Manage and oversee complex ecological projects from inception through to completion.

  • Lead negotiations with consultees and contribute to key planning documents, including Ecological Impact Assessments, EIA Chapters, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Assessments, Mitigation Strategies, Management Plans, and Method Statements.

  • Provide expert guidance in ornithology and Habitat Regulations Assessments, particularly for projects near key bird sites.

  • If desired, develop skills in Expert Witness work to further support clients and planning processes.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of eight years' experience in ecological consultancy or a related field.

  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.

  • Proven ability to manage large-scale, complex projects and liaise effectively with clients, local planning authorities, and statutory bodies.

  • Relevant academic qualifications in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.

  • Expertise in survey techniques, including extended Phase 1 habitat surveys, protected species surveys, and/or botanical assessments.

  • In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation and planning policies.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Experience with EIA/HRA processes and protected species licensing (Expert Witness and ornithological HRA experience desirable).

  • Full membership of CIEEM or Chartered Ecologist status (or actively working towards Chartership).

  • Full UK driving licence.
